Today we have two almost identical Tanuki cocktail mugs. These sort of figural mugs are often given away at American restaurants. Most are widely associated with Benihana's, though knockoffs of the Benihana mugs are found in other restaurants. Alchohol and the mixin's are put in a large opening in the back and the straw is stuck in the hole in the front.
There are at least 4 variations on the mug that I have seen online, but these are the only two I have in my collection.
The dark glaze is funny, because they added the word Tanuki to his belly. I guess so people just didn't think it was a perverted Teddy Bear.

The next one seems to be more common. A thick white glazed Tanuki similar to the guy above, but without the lettering a large sake jar, and an umbrella.

Interesting side fact. The founder of Benihana was Rocky Aoki, father of model and Sin City fetish object, Devon Aoki. So this cherub faced ninja girl has the same dad as these Tauki mugs!

This is a very special edition of the Tanuki collection posts. It features the power couple of my Tanuki crew with a male and female Tanuki together. These figures also differ from most of the rest of my collection because they are more like the old fashioned Tanuki of legend and Japanese art, looking more like the real animal acting like humans instead of the stylized Tanuki statuary seen most commonly in Japan today.
So everyone, say hello to Miss Tanuki!

and bringing up the rear, so to speak, is Mister Tanuki!

For the "total package" let us see how they look together as a whole diorama.

Hello Livejournal! Long time no see.
Today I thought I would actually get started on the long promised and long delayed Tanuki Gallery! From the great minds that brought you the Grimjack Sketch and Art Gallery. So over the next handful of days I will roll out new pictures of the various Tanuki in my collection.

If you do not know, the Tanuki is a real life animal from Japan, also known by Westerners as a "raccoon dog" because it is a canine, but has markings similar to a raccoon.

Japanese folklore gives the Tanuki further traits, as similar to a fox, they can shape shift, especially the skin of thier testicles which could be shaped and stretched.

They have reputations for being tricksters to various degrees of embarrassment of harm to humans. They are also notorious loots and drunks. This is where the Tanuki figure comes into the picture. Most Tanuki figures are used for good luck in the home or restaurants. The typical figure features a straw hat like a monk (a common identity Tanuki would assume), a note pad for IOU's and debts, and a bottle of sake.
I have been collecting these figures for a few years now. So I figured it was time to start sharing!
Let us get the balls rolling with the first two entries in the gallery.
The smallest but not the least of the Tanuki is this little wooden Tauki with a small scene on his belly and a lamp in place of his sake bottle.

Our second is a more traditional Tanuki. The sort you'd find inside a bar or restaurant. I figure he is fairly modern, but the high gloss on his finish suggests to me that he is perhaps mid 20th century as newer Tanuki typically have a flatter finish to the porcelain.

So I am catching up on this recording of SyFy's "Collection Intervention" with an extreme comic book collector, only while he collects, he seems to be primarily a reader. The "interventionist" wants him to transition his collection to older and more valuable comics which would take up less space. That would never work. He obviously has no interest in value or Golden or Silver Age and a smart expert would know he needs to transition into collected editions of the books he loves. It would take up less space in his home and his more valuable Bronze Age books could easily finance the transition. Just saying.

I really do mean to update more LJ. There are things I can write here that I cannot on Fakesbooks. Does it make you feel like I am just using you for a one night stand when it is easy for me LJ?
In the coveting department, I found a sweet Joe Linsner Grimjack sketch in which it basically looks like Dawn dressed as Grinner. Only 250 bucks, cheap right?
The Green Men Festival in Kelly Kentucky went well. Sold a few comics, lots of little alien antenna headbands things, and cleared out a bunch of toys I needed to get rid of. I was hoping to do better than last year, but did about the same really.
Oh well I was gonna write more but I think instead I'm gonna take a tylenol and lay down.

Green Man Days 2012 prep and art

Getting ready for this years Kelly "Little Green Men" Days in Kelly, Kentucky. It is a now annual festival dedicated to the 1955 invasion of a farmhouse by a small army of creatures. Some think it was aliens, some think it was a pack of cryptid creatures, most people just think it was just another day in Kentucky! Last year we did really well selling alien related merch, along with comics and toys. It got the old huckster in me really motivated. It also got the artist in me motivated some too. I decided to add original alien inspired paintings to the lineup too. Here are a few previews.
<lj-embed id="239" />
New Hopkinsville Kelly Goblin by ~doktorkamisama on deviantART
<lj-embed id="240" />
New Cansler Cat Theory by ~doktorkamisama on deviantART
So if you happen to be in the southern part of Western Kentucky on August 18th, come stop by Kelly. I think there is even going to be a crazy disco UFO there this year.

I will say this about Dark Knight Rises. Some people are calling it an "Occupy Wall Street"/99% movie. I can sorta see that. Some people are calling it a Post 9-11 movie (so was the last one). But nobody seems to want to state the obvious. It is also a Post Katrina film. People are abandoned and left to their fates by those who are supposed to protect them. "Batman: No Man's Land" was speculative fiction, but when Katrina flooded New Orleans, it became a prophecy. Parts of this film use that prophecy as inspiration.

I tried to give Ultimate Spider-man show a chance. But for some reason it don't work for me. I did realize something watching it one day with my son. This is a kid TV version of Deadpool! He cracks even more jokes than Spidey normally does, they break the 3rd wall all the time. I would not doubt that the concept started out that way, but when the Disney people got involved and realized Deadpool is really violent and nobody outside of comics knows who he is, then the safer bet was to turn it into a Spider-Man cartoon.
Maybe I should re-watch it imagining that it is Teen Deadpool instead of Spider-Man and it just might work?

I am extremely proud to show off the newest addition to the Grimjack sketch gallery!
This man needs no introduction to comic fans of the 80's. His worked regularly appeared in Marvel comics and the in-house fan magazine Marvel Age. He single handedly destroyed the Marvel Universe in his own One-Shot special. I should also mention that his art did appear in Grimjack as a backup story about Munden's Bar so he knows his way around sweet, cynical, Cynosure. Ladies, gentlemen, and tourbots!
Lady shows me some comics, most of which look something like Sunday funnies from the newspaper to most of the other folks out there. She asks me what they are and if they are worth something. I told her I was not sure if they were valuable, but I knew exactly what they were. 80's issues of The Beano, Dandy, and Eagle from the UK. I played another hand out there today, now the other "comic nerds" at the dirt mall are now aware that I know far more than they do about old comics. I just wonder how did old British comics get all the way to Middle Tennessee?
